Applications Engineering, Sr Staff Engineer
We Are
Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.
You Are
You have spent a decade building, verifying, or supporting silicon that ships, and you know the difference between a clean integration and one that costs your customer three months of debug. You understand that a protocol spec is just the starting point. The real work begins when someone tries to configure PCIe Gen5 in a power-constrained automotive SoC or bring up DDR5 on a board that was not quite laid out the way the datasheet suggested.
You have been in the room when things go wrong during tape-out or bring-up, and you are the person who stays calm, asks the right questions, and finds the path through. You can read Verilog, trace a timing violation back to its root cause, and explain what went wrong to a customer engineer who is three time zones away and under pressure. You do not need perfect documentation to move forward. You work with what you have, fill in the gaps, and keep the project on track.
At Synopsys, you will work directly with customers integrating our Interface IP into their most critical designs. The problems are real, the stakes are high, and the work you do will directly determine whether their silicon works on the first pass.
What You'll Be Doing
- Serve as the technical point of contact for customers integrating Synopsys Interface IP, including Ethernet, PCIe, and DDR, into complex SoC designs
- Guide customers through IP configuration, feature selection, and integration into their RTL and verification environments
- Debug critical issues across simulation, synthesis, static timing analysis, and physical design flows using tools like VCS, Design Compiler, and PrimeTime
- Support silicon and system bring-up activities, working with customers to diagnose and resolve hardware-level issues in lab environments
- Collaborate with Synopsys R&D, product engineering, and field teams to deliver tailored solutions and escalate complex technical problems
- Stay current with evolving protocol specifications for Ethernet, PCIe, DDR, and emerging standards relevant to automotive, AI, and data center applications
- Travel occasionally to customer sites for on-site integration support, training, and bring-up assistance
The Impact You Will Have
- Enable successful first-pass silicon for customers by catching integration issues early and providing expert guidance through tape-out
- Reduce customer time-to-market by resolving technical blockers quickly and accurately during critical project phases
- Strengthen customer relationships and drive repeat business by becoming a trusted technical advisor they rely on for complex integrations
- Influence future IP product roadmaps by feeding real-world customer requirements and pain points back to Synopsys R&D teams
- Expand adoption of Synopsys Interface IP across high-growth markets including automotive, AI accelerators, and hyperscale data centers
- Contribute to the success of next-generation products that depend on high-speed, low-latency connectivity in increasingly complex system architectures
- Build internal knowledge and best practices that improve how Synopsys supports customers across the entire applications engineering organization
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field with focus on VLSI or digital design
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in ASIC/SoC design, verification, or applications engineering with exposure to full tape-out cycles
- Deep working knowledge of at least one high-speed protocol: Ethernet (10G/25G/50G/100G/400G), PCIe (Gen3/Gen4/Gen5), or DDR (DDR4/DDR5/LPDDR5)
- Strong RTL coding skills in Verilog or VHDL, with ability to read, debug, and modify customer design code
- Practical experience with simulation (VCS, ModelSim, Xcelium), synthesis (Design Compiler, Genus), and static timing analysis (PrimeTime, Tempus) in a UNIX/Linux environment
- Familiarity with clock domain crossing (CDC), reset domain crossing (RDC), lint, DFT, and logical equivalence checking (LEC) is a strong plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences
Who You Are
- You can take a vague customer problem description, ask three clarifying questions, and walk away with a clear action plan that actually solves the issue
- You are comfortable working across time zones and cultures, adapting your communication style to meet customers where they are technically and operationally
- You manage multiple customer engagements at once without dropping threads, keeping stakeholders informed and issues moving toward resolution
- You know when to dig in and solve a problem yourself and when to pull in specialists from R&D, and you do both without ego
- You are willing to travel occasionally for customer visits, training sessions, and on-site bring-up support when the situation calls for it
- You stay current with industry trends and protocol evolution because you understand that what you learned five years ago is not enough for what customers are building today
The Team You'll Be Part Of
Your recruiter will share more about the team structure and mission during the interview process.
At Synopsys, we want talented people of every background to feel valued and supported to do their best work. Synopsys considers all applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, military veteran status, or disability.
