What You’ll Be Doing:

Synopsys (Eindhoven, NL) is involved in a European Research Project - ResilientTrust - amongst others with the technology innovation company Almende (Rotterdam, NL). One of the project goals is to integrate Synopsys’ PUF-based device-unique security solutions with Almende’s smart plug application called Crownstone.

Crownstone is a smart plug that can be used to control/tune the environment to the user. Crownstone devices are connected via a mesh network in private homes or larger buildings such as offices, and hence security is important for them.

Synopsys has a broad security IP portfolio, including solutions based on SRAM PUF IP, which are relevant for increasing Crownstone’s security. An SRAM PUF is essentially a fingerprint of a physical chip, from which device-unique cryptographic keys are derived.

You'll:

• Get familiar with Synopsys’ and Almende’s products and perform a prototype integration project.
• Design, implement, and demonstrate an embedded security architecture for a selected use case on Almende’s Crownstone smart plug.
• Integrate Synopsys’ PUF-based device-unique security solutions with Crownstone’s smart plug application.
• Work with embedded microcontrollers and Synopsys’ PUF IP in the form of an embedded software library.
• Conduct regular visits to Almende in Rotterdam, NL, and collaborate closely with their team.

What You’ll Need:

• Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
• Affinity for embedded systems, and an interest in security and practical cryptography.
• Prior experience in embedded programming (C-code) and working with microcontrollers is a plus.
• Proficiency in English, as the project will be conducted in this language.

Key Program Facts:

• Program Length: 6 months (negotiable, based on student’s program).
• Full-time
• Location: Main internship location is in Eindhoven, NL (High-Tech Campus), but a hybrid working model is possible. Regular visits to Almende (Rotterdam, NL) will be needed, and performing parts of the project there could be considered.
• Working Model: Hybrid (combination of onsite and remote work).
• Expected Start Date: February (negotiable)
