Thermal Application Engineer
We Are
Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.
You Are
You have spent years solving real thermal problems in power electronics, not just running simulations but actually understanding why an e-motor overheats at peak load or how a battery pack thermal runaway propagates. You know the difference between a model that converges and one that actually reflects physics, and you care about that difference because your work has to guide decisions that matter, not just generate colorful contour plots.
You are comfortable walking into a room with a customer's engineering team, looking at their inverter cooling challenge or fuel cell thermal stack design, and within an hour mapping out a simulation strategy that they trust. You do not need a perfect problem statement to get started. You ask the right questions, recognize what is missing, and build confidence through clarity and competence.
Mentoring comes naturally to you because you have been the junior engineer who needed guidance, and you remember what actually helped versus what sounded impressive but went nowhere. You think in workflows, not just tools. At Synopsys, you will work with customers solving the hardest thermal and power electronics problems in electrification, and what you build, demonstrate, and teach will directly shape how they engineer what is ahead.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead technical pre-sales engagements on strategic power electronics accounts across EMEA, running discovery sessions, product demos, benchmarks, and proof-of-concept evaluations that close deals
- Execute detailed thermal simulations on customer applications including e-motors, battery packs, fuel cells, and inverters using Ansys Discovery, Ansys Fluent, Ansys Icepak, and coupled thermal-structural workflows in Ansys Mechanical
- Translate customer thermal management and electronics cooling requirements into actionable simulation strategies, articulate the Synopsys value proposition, and map technical workflows to business outcomes
- Mentor application engineers on the team, share power electronics best practices, and contribute to sales enablement content that drives pipeline and revenue growth
- Partner with Synopsys product development teams to translate field feedback and customer requirements into new product features across the thermal portfolio
- Test pre-release thermal software on real industrial problems, document findings, and provide structured feedback to engineering teams to improve product quality and capability
- Collaborate with field and product marketing to create technical content including application briefs, webinars, and demos that generate leads and support the sales cycle
The Impact You Will Have
- Accelerate adoption of Synopsys thermal simulation tools at the most strategic power electronics accounts in EMEA, directly contributing to revenue growth in the electrification market
- Enable customers to solve critical thermal challenges faster and with higher confidence, reducing physical prototyping cycles and time to market for e-motors, batteries, fuel cells, and inverters
- Shape the roadmap of Synopsys thermal products by channeling real-world customer needs and application challenges into engineering priorities that matter
- Build technical credibility and long-term customer relationships that create competitive differentiation and expansion opportunities across accounts
- Elevate the capability of the application engineering team through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and development of reusable workflows and best practices
- Drive digital transformation initiatives at customer sites by demonstrating how upfront exploration tools and high-fidelity solvers integrate into modern product development processes
- Strengthen Synopsys market position in power electronics and electrification by delivering technical wins that competitors cannot match
What You'll Need
- BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Power, or Material Science Engineering with 4+ years of professional experience in engineering software, or MS with 2+ years, or PhD
- Hands-on experience using multiple Ansys thermal products including Ansys Discovery, Ansys Fluent, and Ansys Icepak, plus thermal stress analysis in Ansys Mechanical, or equivalent commercial CAE, CFD, EDA, CAD, or PLM tools
- Solid grounding in heat transfer fundamentals including conduction, convection, and radiation, thermal management of power electronics, electronics cooling strategies, and thermal stress phenomena like thermal expansion, warpage, and fatigue
- Working knowledge of power electronics hardware including e-motors, batteries, fuel cells, and inverters, and their typical cooling approaches such as liquid cold plates, direct or immersion cooling, heat sinks, and power module thermal design
- Scripting and automation capability in Python, IronPython, C++, or similar languages applied to simulation workflows and process automation
- Fluent English in writing and speaking, with the ability to travel within EMEA up to 25% of the time
- Industry experience in power electronics applications across sectors like automotive, e-mobility, aerospace, energy, industrial equipment, or telecommunications is a strong plus, as is proficiency in German or French
Who You Are
- You can walk a customer through a complex conjugate heat transfer problem, explain why their mesh is failing to capture boundary layer physics, and propose a fix that works, all in a 30-minute screen share
- Ambiguity does not slow you down because you have learned to work with incomplete information, fill gaps through smart questions, and move forward without waiting for perfect clarity
- You have a point of view on simulation best practices and you are willing to push back when a customer's approach will not scale or a sales strategy misses the technical mark
- Organizational discipline is second nature to you because managing multiple customer engagements, product tests, and internal projects simultaneously requires it, and you have built systems that keep nothing from falling through the cracks
- You project credibility in technical conversations because you have done the work, debugged the models, and lived through enough simulation projects to know what actually matters versus what sounds good in a slide deck
- You are driven to succeed not by hitting arbitrary metrics but by solving real problems for customers and seeing your work translate into tools and workflows that make their jobs easier
The Team You'll Be Part Of
You will join the EMEA Thermal Design Engineering team, a group of global experts supporting the full Ansys thermal portfolio including Ansys Discovery, Ansys Fluent, and Ansys Icepak, as well as coupled thermal-structural workflows in Ansys Mechanical. The team focuses on power electronics applications such as e-motors, batteries, fuel cells, and inverters. As a senior member, you will act as a technical reference point across multi-disciplinary teams and help drive significant business impact in the fast-growing electrification and power electronics market.
Rewards and Benefits
We offer a comprehensive range of health, wellness, and financial benefits to cater to your needs. Our total rewards include both monetary and non-monetary offerings. Your recruiter will provide more details about the salary range and benefits during the hiring process.
At Synopsys, we want talented people of every background to feel valued and supported to do their best work. Synopsys considers all applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, military veteran status, or disability.
