Applications Engineering, Sr Director
We Are
Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.
You Are
You have spent years in the trenches of ASIC and SoC design, and you know that the gap between a tool working in theory and working in production is where most projects either fly or die. You have debugged enough timing violations, power issues, and convergence problems to know that the answer is rarely in the error message. It is in understanding what the customer was actually trying to do, what corner they painted themselves into three weeks ago, and what tradeoff they have not considered yet.
You do not just answer questions. You ask better ones. When a customer says "the tool is slow," you dig into their constraints, their flow, their dataset, and you come back with three things they can try tomorrow. You have built enough flows yourself to know what good looks like, and you can spot a bad setup from the log file alone.
Leading a team does not mean stepping away from the technical work. It means multiplying your impact through others while staying sharp enough to jump into the hardest customer escalations when it matters. You are comfortable in a room with a VP of Engineering at a top semiconductor company, and equally comfortable whiteboarding a clock tree problem with an engineer who just wants their design to close.
At Synopsys, you will lead a team supporting customers on tools that define how chips get built, and the problems you solve will directly affect whether those chips tape out on time.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead a team of application engineers supporting customers across India and APAC on Synopsys EDA tools including Design Compiler, Fusion Compiler, ICC2, PrimeTime, and signoff flows
- Jump into the most complex customer escalations involving timing closure, power optimization, physical design bottlenecks, or tool deployment issues that your team cannot crack alone
- Work directly with R&D teams in Mountain View, Bangalore, and Armenia to reproduce customer-reported bugs, validate fixes, and push for features that matter in production flows
- Build and deliver technical workshops, training sessions, and best practice guidance for customers deploying tools at advanced nodes including 7nm, 5nm, and 3nm
- Develop automation scripts and flow optimizations in Tcl, Python, or Shell that get reused across customer engagements and become part of your team's standard toolkit
- Partner with sales and pre-sales teams on evaluations, benchmarks, and proof-of-concept work that turns into design wins
- Manage hiring, mentoring, and technical growth for your team while keeping them focused on the customer problems that actually move the business
The Impact You Will Have
- Your team will be the reason customers choose to expand their Synopsys toolset rather than evaluate alternatives when a project hits a wall
- The scripts, flows, and methodologies you build will get deployed across dozens of customer sites and save hundreds of engineering hours per tapeout
- Your escalations and feedback will directly shape R&D priorities, turning field pain points into product improvements that benefit the entire user base
- The engineers you hire and mentor will become the next generation of technical leaders in application engineering across Synopsys
- Your workshops and training will raise the technical bar for how customers use Synopsys tools, leading to faster bring-up, fewer support tickets, and better outcomes
- The relationships you build with senior engineering leaders at top semiconductor companies will open doors for strategic partnerships and long-term tool adoption
- Your ability to translate complex customer problems into clear technical requirements will accelerate product development cycles and keep Synopsys ahead in competitive evaluations
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's or Master's in Electronics Engineering, VLSI Design, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering
- 15+ years of hands-on experience in ASIC/SoC design, physical design, synthesis, STA, verification, or DFT flows, with at least 3 years leading technical teams or customer-facing engineering organizations
- Deep working knowledge of at least three of the following Synopsys tools: Design Compiler, Fusion Compiler, ICC2, PrimeTime, VC SpyGlass, or Formality, not just surface familiarity but the kind that comes from debugging real customer designs
- Strong grasp of RTL-to-GDSII implementation including timing closure, clock tree synthesis, low-power design (UPF/CPF), and signoff requirements across multiple process nodes
- Scripting fluency in Tcl, Python, Perl, or Shell, you should be able to write a flow automation script without looking up syntax every five minutes
- Experience supporting advanced nodes (7nm, 5nm, or 3nm) is a strong plus, as is exposure to AI-driven EDA optimization or working directly with foundries
- Excellent communication skills in English, you will be presenting to VPs, training engineers, and writing technical content that gets read across the organization
Who You Are
- You can walk into a customer meeting with incomplete information, ask the right questions in the first ten minutes, and leave with a clear action plan that the customer actually believes in
- Debugging energizes you, when everyone else is ready to file a bug report and move on, you are the one who wants to reproduce it one more time with different constraints
- You do not wait for someone to tell you what to prioritize, you look at where the business is headed, where your team is stretched, and where customers are struggling, and you make the call
- You can explain a complex timing closure tradeoff to a senior engineering director in two sentences without losing the nuance, and then turn around and mentor a junior engineer through the same problem with patience
- You stay technical even while managing people, your team knows you can still out-debug most of them when it counts, and that credibility matters when you are asking them to take on hard problems
- You are comfortable working across time zones with teams in the US, Europe, and Asia, which means some early calls, some late calls, and a lot of asynchronous communication that has to be clear the first time
The Team You'll Be Part Of
You will lead the Application Engineering team in Bangalore, supporting customers across India and the broader APAC region. Your team works closely with R&D organizations globally, sales teams on the ground, and customer engineering teams at some of the largest semiconductor companies and design houses in the region. This is a highly technical team that values depth, customer impact, and the ability to solve problems that do not have obvious answers. Your recruiter will share more about team size, structure, and current focus areas during the interview process.
Rewards and Benefits
We offer a comprehensive range of health, wellness, and financial benefits to cater to your needs. Our total rewards include both monetary and non-monetary offerings. Your recruiter will provide more details about the salary range and benefits during the hiring process.
At Synopsys, we want talented people of every background to feel valued and supported to do their best work. Synopsys considers all applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, military veteran status, or disability.
