We Are

Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.

You Are

You have spent years learning that the most interesting legal work happens where technology, risk, and business needs come together. You understand the difference between a legal issue that requires a hard stop and one that needs a thoughtful workaround, and you have developed the judgment to navigate that distinction in real time. You know how to balance urgency with rigor, giving business leaders the answers they need without cutting corners on the legal analysis.

Investigations are part of your toolkit. You have worked through cases involving IP concerns, insider threats, and cybersecurity incidents where the facts take time to emerge and the stakes matter. You know how to ask good questions, work collaboratively with InfoSec, HR, and engineering teams, and keep the legal strategy on track even when things get complicated.

You are comfortable enough with technology to understand what is actually at risk when conversations turn to source code, licensing structures, or third-party integrations. Drafting agreements and advising on confidentiality matters is familiar ground for you. You help people understand complex legal issues without making them feel like they are being handed a list of reasons why something cannot be done.

At Synopsys, you will work on meaningful legal challenges for a semiconductor and AI company operating at global scale, and you will do it alongside a team that values sound judgment and practical problem-solving.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Manage internal investigations involving IP, confidential information, and insider threats, working with InfoSec, HR, and business teams to gather facts, assess risk, and guide resolution
  • Partner with the Information Security organization on legal and regulatory matters related to data protection, cybersecurity response, insider risk programs, and protection of proprietary technology and trade secrets
  • Advise engineering, product, and business teams on IP ownership, confidentiality obligations, licensing structures, and technology transfer considerations in the context of semiconductor IP, EDA tools, and AI development
  • Draft, negotiate, and review agreements involving licensing of copyrighted works, software, and other intellectual property, ensuring they align with business goals and manage risk appropriately
  • Assess legal considerations for strategic initiatives, partnerships, and emerging technology projects, and translate them into practical guidance for senior stakeholders
  • Help develop policies, procedures, and training programs that protect company assets and support compliance with legal and regulatory requirements across a global workforce
  • Collaborate across Legal, InfoSec, HR, Engineering, Product Management, and other functions to provide practical legal support that enables business progress while managing risk thoughtfully

The Impact You Will Have

  • Help protect Synopsys' valuable IP and confidential information through thoughtful investigation management, policy development, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Support faster, more informed decision-making by providing clear legal guidance that business leaders can use in time-sensitive situations
  • Strengthen the company's cybersecurity and insider threat posture by working closely with InfoSec on legal frameworks, incident response, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Help reduce legal and business risk across strategic initiatives by identifying issues early and designing solutions that work in practice
  • Build understanding and capability across the organization through training, policy work, and direct counseling that helps teams protect company assets in their daily work
  • Support Synopsys' growth and innovation by ensuring that IP licensing, technology partnerships, and confidentiality structures are sound, enforceable, and aligned with business objectives
  • Contribute to how Synopsys approaches emerging legal issues in AI, semiconductor technology, and global information security as the landscape continues to evolve

What You'll Need

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
  • Six or more years of legal experience with significant work involving intellectual property matters, including licensing, ownership questions, or protection of proprietary technology
  • Strong working knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements relating to information security, confidential information protection, cybersecurity incident response, and corporate compliance
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex legal matters, including investigations, IP issues, and cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly to both legal and non-legal audiences
  • Experience advising technology companies, particularly in-house or in roles requiring strategic counseling in dynamic environments, is a strong plus
  • Experience supporting cybersecurity, privacy, or information protection programs, or conducting sensitive internal investigations, is highly valued

Who You Are

  • You can sit down with an engineer, an InfoSec analyst, and an HR partner, hear different perspectives on what happened, and work through what the actual legal issue is in a way that keeps everyone engaged
  • You write clearly and efficiently, whether it is a privilege memo, a licensing clause, or an email to a VP explaining the considerations around a business decision
  • You know when to escalate and when to handle something yourself, and you are comfortable making that call without second-guessing it
  • You stay steady under pressure, especially when an investigation is moving quickly, facts are still coming together, and people are looking to you for guidance
  • You are willing to share your perspective on risk and push back constructively when a proposed approach raises legal or practical concerns, even in conversations with senior stakeholders
  • You understand that being helpful matters as much as being right, and you care about delivering advice that people can actually use

The Team You'll Be Part Of

You will join Synopsys' Global Legal organization, a team that provides comprehensive legal support across the company's business, technology, and compliance functions. The team works closely with Information Security, HR, Engineering, Product Management, and senior leadership to address complex legal challenges and support business growth. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across Legal and partner closely with the InfoSec organization on some of the most important and technically sophisticated legal issues facing the company. You will work in an environment where your judgment, expertise, and ability to deliver practical solutions will make a real difference in how Synopsys protects its assets and supports innovation.

Rewards and Benefits

We offer a comprehensive range of health, wellness, and financial benefits to cater to your needs. Our total rewards include both monetary and non-monetary offerings. Your recruiter will provide more details about the salary range and benefits during the hiring process.

Flagged Gaps:

  • Team structure and reporting line: The input mentions the hiring manager (Ean Sewell) but does not describe the broader Legal team structure, the size of the team, or how this role fits within it. Question: Can you describe the size of the Global Legal team, how many attorneys this person will work alongside, and whether this role reports directly to Ean or to another layer?
  • Day-to-day collaboration and volume: The responsibilities are clear, but there is no sense of volume or cadence. Question: How many active investigations or InfoSec matters would this person typically manage at once, and what does a typical week look like in terms of stakeholder meetings, drafting work, and reactive vs. proactive projects?
  • Specific tools or systems: The input does not mention whether this role involves working with specific case management systems, contract management platforms, or InfoSec tools. Question: Are there specific tools or systems this person will use regularly (e.g., case management software, contract lifecycle management, SIEM or incident response platforms)?

At Synopsys, we want talented people of every background to feel valued and supported to do their best work. Synopsys considers all applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, military veteran status, or disability.

In addition to the base salary, this role may be eligible for an annual bonus, equity, and other discretionary bonuses. Synopsys offers comprehensive health, wellness, and financial benefits as part of a competitive total rewards package. The actual compensation offered will be based on a number of job-related factors, including location, skills, experience, and education. Your recruiter can share more specific details on the total rewards package upon request. The base salary range for this role is across the U.S.
